PackDesign Engineer 2012
Develop smart packaging for Santa Maria and get your contribution displayed at Scanpack 2012. Three finalists win great prices and have the chance of becoming PackDesign Engineer 2012.
Billerud, Scanpack 2012 and Santa Maria invite you to take part in an exciting packaging competition to decide who will be the PackDesign Engineer 2012. The competition will reward clever and practical packaging engineering solutions. No graphic design is to be submitted.
The competition.
The competition comprises two preliminary heats and a final to solve tasks set by Santa Maria. The entries in the first heat will be evaluated in spring 2012, when 20 of the entrants will go on to take part in the second heat and solve a new task.In the fall , three of these will be selected to go to the final, to be held 23 October at Scanpack 2012 in Gothenburg
Criteria.
Given the various assignments, the competition will pose a number of challenges, but always within the framework of developing packaging solutions for Santa Maria's products; solutions that work on the production line, in the supermarkets and in consumers' kitchens. Retail-ready, convenience, manageability in production, and logistics are the features that the jury will be looking for. The jury will also take the level of innovation into consideration.
Who can enter?
The competition is primarily intended for professional packaging engineers and people studying packaging engineering.
The competition entries will be judged by a jury of packaging experts. The jury's decision will be final. Read more about the jurors.
Description of competition task.
Santa Maria's Tex Mex range includes Soft Tortilla, an important major product. The special properties of the product make it necessary to transport the bread lying down, but to display it standing up on the supermarket shelves. The competitors' task is to design transport packaging that meets the following criteria:
- User-friendly, easy to handle and collapse
- Display-friendly and stackable after opening the packaging
- Good display of the primary packaging
- Protection of the product during transport
- Fully automated product solution
The wish list also includes a requirement for the packaging to be pallet-adapted for 1200 x 800 mm, and 1200 x 1000 mm pallets.
The competition entries shall consist of:
- Construction drawing (with description if necessary)
- Image, preferably 3-D
- Prototype
Prizes for winning finalists
1st prize, a trip to Mexico for two, sponsored by Santa Maria and a spread in nord-emballage magazine.
2nd prize, a trip to London for two, sponsored by Billerud.
3rd prize, a dinner for two at Heaven 23 with an overnight stay at Hotel Gothia Towers in Gothenburg, sponsored by Scanpack.
The winners are responsible for any income tax levied on the value of the prizes.

All intellectual and other rights associated with the above entry are released to Santa Maria AB through this agreement and my participation in the contest. Santa Maria thereby has, unlimited by time or geography, the unrestricted and exclusive rights to use the design within the framework of its business, without becoming subject to any claims for recompense or other forms of compensation. Santa Maria's rights also include the right to change or modify the competition entry. The competition entry is not subject to rights of any other kind belonging to another party, and I am at liberty to submit the entry and agree that Santa Maria owns all rights to the competition entry without restriction.
The entries for Heat 1 must be postmarked no later than april 15, 2012. The contestants who go on to Heat 2 will be notified by e-mail or telephone no later than maj 1, 2012

The three finalists will be presented at Scanpack, october 23, 2012. The winner will be revealed together with a award show.
